Your First Appointment with Faye: What to Prepare Before You Arrive

Seeing a stylist for the first time, most people worry about not knowing how to describe what they want, or about arriving and finding there is not enough time. A few pieces of information at the booking stage make the consultation far more efficient.

Say what you want to book

Let Faye know whether you are booking a cut, colour, perm, straightening or treatment. If you are not sure, describe what you most want to fix instead — volume at the roots, frizz from natural curl, uneven colour, or dry ends.

Different services need different amounts of time, so saying up front avoids arriving and finding the full service cannot be fitted in. If you want more than one thing done on the same day, mention that when booking too.

How much time should I allow?

The real answer depends on your length, thickness and hair condition, but as a rough idea: a cut alone is usually the shortest, colour adds processing and waiting time on top, and perms and straightening take noticeably longer because they involve product processing and a heat stage.

Long hair, thick hair, or working around existing colour all add to that. If you have somewhere to be afterwards, say how much time you have when booking — it is much easier to plan something that fits, or to split the work across two visits.

Three things worth preparing

1. Photos of your hair now in natural daylight: front, side and back.
2. Two years of colour, bleach, perm, straightening and box-dye history.
3. Reference styles you like, plus how much time you usually spend on your hair.

Reference photos are for communicating length, outline, curl and colour direction. They do not mean everyone's hair can produce exactly the same result — texture, damage and facial proportions still have to be assessed in person.

Why colour and perm history matters so much

Hair does not forget what has been done to it. A bleach two years ago, a perm last year, a box dye last month — all of it is still present in the hair you have now, and all of it affects what can be done next and how it will turn out.

Box dye especially. Shop-bought products do not always list their contents in full, and some ingredients can react unpredictably with perm or bleach products used later. It does not mean nothing more can be done — it means your stylist needs to know, so the right approach can be chosen or a test done first.

If you are not sure of exact dates, roughly which season and roughly how many times is already useful.

Should I wash my hair before coming?

Normal is fine. There is no need to deliberately go several days without washing. Do avoid heavy wax, hairspray or root-coverage products on the day, as they make the hair harder to assess. If your scalp is red, broken or genuinely uncomfortable, say so beforehand — it may be better to postpone.

Things worth saying out loud in the consultation

On a first visit, being specific is what prevents a gap between expectation and result. Alongside what you want, it helps to say:

• The shortest length you would accept.
• What you dislike most about your hair right now.
• How many minutes you will actually spend on it in the morning.
• Any constraints from work — needing to tie it back, or colour that cannot be too visible.
• Anything you have had done before and did not like.

All of this feeds directly into the design. If something is not achievable, Faye will say so before starting rather than leaving you to discover it afterwards.
